For a society to be competitive in the future, it will need to harness its members’ creative ideas and the power of science and technology. In this society, a person needs to have both knowledge of science and technology and imagination and artistic sensibility. With this requirement in mind, STEAM education integrates science, mathematics, technology, engineering, and art into a single curriculum. Through this study, researchers developed a STEAM program that made connections between the vascular bundle system of plants and the circulatory system of animals in 5th grade science. The purposes were to find the impact on the academic achievement, creative problem solving abilities, and scientific attitude of elementary school students. Participants were 28 fifth grade students who were divided into control and experimental groups. The control group had a traditional science class, while the experimental group had a STEAM program that integrated content of plants and animals. Results show that only the experimental group increased significantly in levels of academic achievement and creative problem solving abilities. In spite of the span of such a short-term program, level of scientific attitude was also significantly elevated in the experimental group, compared with the control group. Therefore, STEAM programs need to be developed over a longer period of time by reorganizing the curriculum and implementing such programs in school.
