The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the STEAM program based on backward design on students’ academic achievement and scientific attitudes in 3rd grade ‘Life of Animals’ unit of the elementary science. To accomplish this, the STEAM program, which is composed of unit objectives, question development, evaluation planing, learning experience, and class development according to the backward design stage, was developed for a total of nine sessions. As a result of the post-test of the academic achievement and scientific attitudes of the group participating in the STEAM program and the group participating in the traditional lesson, there was no meaningful difference between the two groups in academic achievement, but the experimental group significantly improved in the scientific attitudes than the comparative group. It can be seen that the STEAM program based on the backward design had a positive effect on the students’ scientific attitudes. In the other area of elementary science, if we recognize the usefulness of prior evaluation plan of backward model and develop and apply the STEAM program in class development, students will be more interested in science lessons and can enhance learning ability.
