The purposes of this study were to develop a STEAM program focused on supporting functions of plants and human bodies and to ascertain its influence on elementary students’ academic achievement, basic scientific process skills and affective domain. The STEAM program was developed by reorganizing contents in regards to structural support systems, such as roots, stems, or bones, of plants and human bodies. It was designed with an interdisciplinary approach to teach how plants and human beings support their bodies effectively by helping learners inquire biological examples and roles of the structures to support the weights. The contents were based on the learning scope from the units of ‘Structure and Function of Plants’ and ‘Structure and Function of Human Bodies’ in 2009 revised national science curriculum for 5th and 6th grades. The developed STEAM program was applied to an experimental group comprised of 5th grade students from A elementary school located in J province, whereas compartmentalized lessons guided by the national curriculum were applied to a control group. As a result, the experimental group studying with the STEAM program did not have significant differences in the academic achievement. Meanwhile, the STEAM program partially led significant improvements in basic scientific process skills and affective domain because the post test scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than the control group’s scores in some subdomains: measurement, learning motivation (values of mathematics and science), and STEM career interest.
