This work aimed to analyze the developmental biology content of high school biology textbooks in Korea, Japan, and the United States and to provide a direction for writing in the developmental biology area according to the curriculum reform. We analyzed the developmental biology content in Korean biology textbooks of the 5th～7th curricula and then compared it to that of Japan's textbooks and the United States' BSCS (blue) biology textbooks. The biology textbooks of the 5th and 6th curricula covered basic processes and mechanisms of animal development and considered reproduction, development, genetics, and evolution together, using the theme of a continuity of life. However, the 7th curriculum did not deal with the developmental mechanism or the integrative aspects. The United States' and Japan's biology textbooks thoroughly covered basic processes and mechanisms of animal development. Furthermore, Japan's biology textbooks and the U.S.'s BSCS also dealt with the molecular aspect of development, which is one modern perspective about the mechanisms of development. Using these analyses, we suggest that future biology textbooks need to include developmental processes and mechanisms, and integrative aspect dealing with reproduction, development, genetics, and evolution together and, finally, a modern developmental mechanism, such as a molecular genetic aspect.
