The purpose of this study was to find out the relevance of biology content in the 7th national science curriculum and textbooks. To satisfy the purpose of this study, we compared biology curriculum documents of the several countries including Korea, the United States(California), Japan, and the United Kingdom, and analyzed the Korean and Japanese science textbooks. We conducted a nationwide survey to get opinions from students, teachers, and specialists on the relevance of the 7th national science curriculum and textbooks. The summarized results are as follows; First, the biology content at each grade level should not be determined by volumetric balances adjusted in four fields of science, but the students' characteristics. Second, the contents for ecological and environmental units should be reconstructed and supplemented. Third, avoiding to the spiral curriculum, the number of biological topics at each grade level should be reduced, and similar topics and themes should be integrated. Fourth, the number of unnecessary biological concepts and activities should be diminished to an appropriate level for students' deeper understanding and learning motivation. Fifth, teaching materials for biological inquiry activities and learning should be developed and organized centering on students' experiences, understanding and interests. Sixth, biology content of the 10th grade science - metabolism, stimulus and response, reproduction should be reconsidered because of seriously overlapping with the 8th and the 11~12th grade science.
