Teaching biotechnology in high school biology classes can contribute to cultivate scientific literacy. The advantages of biotechnology education were greatly appreciated in all of the currently available Biology textbooks. Biotechnology was integrated through out the textbooks, both in Biology I and in Biology II. In addition, all of the books reserved some or all of the last chapter in summarizing the current status of biology by introducing applications and societal aspects of recent advances in biotechnology. There were included recombinant genetic techniques, stem cell research, animal cloning, and so forth. The textbooks provided informations on scientific and technical applications as well as their risks. However, we found some inappropriate content when considering the level of the students. In many cases, it was not clear to tell whether the technique is currently in wide use or still in the early experimental stage. The arguments often fluctuated between the extremes when explaining the ambivalent nature of technology. Finally, some of the inquiry questions were too vague or too broad for students to find an appropriate answer. Considering the page limit in the textbook, we suggest narrating biotechnology in the historical context that shows how science and technology have solved problems of the modern world and also the ethical problems accompanying those technical solutions. This would help students to develop scientific literacy while understanding the current status and the future prospect of biotechnology.
