High school students’ understanding of genetics and molecular biology concepts were examined to get insights of the future direction for genetics and molecular biology education in high school. The concept test included the questions regarding four major topics in genetics and molecular biology and applied to the first and second grade high school students who had taken different combinations of biology related subjects in school. The results of the concept test were analyzed based on the topics and difficulty of questions and the subject that students had taken in the school. From these results, we found that the ‘Science’ which is a subject in current 2009 revised curriculum improved student’s understanding on the limited topics, such as ‘location and composition of genetic information’ and some concepts regarding ‘functions and expression of genetic information’, although this subject covered almost all concepts related with genetics and molecular biology. Also, many high school students regardless of the subjects they took in school showed the tendency to memorize genetics or molecular biology concepts and processes without understanding their true meaning or principle. Furthermore, the majority of students have difficulties to understand the basic principles such as the meaning of genes, central dogma, and the meaning of gene expression control, due to the lack of understanding the structure and function of proteins. Therefore, we hope that the curriculum of biology related subjects or teaching processes will be improved to address those problems in the near future.
