In Gyeonggi-Do, 37,846 taxis are operating by 38,411 taxi drivers in 2021. There are operating 27,228 private taxis, and 10,618 company taxis operated by 11,183 drivers. The number of 37,846 taxis means 15% of all taxis in South Korea. Taxi specialists have continuously wanted to analyze characteristics on taxis to increase the level of taxi service. However, There is not enough information on the Gyeonggi taxis.
This study aims to find out diverse taxi characteristics by analyzing lots of taxi data, and suggest a couple of plans to develop the taxi industry in Gyeonggi-Do. However, a collection of diverse taxi data is not easy. It requires the assistance of reliable relevant organizations because there is no centers to collect and analyze combined taxi data.
A characteristic on taxi demand shows that a number of taxi passengers has been gradually reduced since 2006 although total number of taxis has been increased little by little. That is why the income of taxi drivers has not increased enough to sustain their working in the taxi market. These days, there is no sufficient taxi drivers in the field. Their working environment is getting much worse than ever.
The characteristic on taxi operations shows that company taxis carry usually passenger 26 times a day even though private taxis carry 18 times a day. Company taxi drivers work more than 13 hours, and drive taxis 282.5 kilometers a day. Private taxi drivers usually less work than company taxi drivers. Company taxi drivers work continuously at their companies for 5.9 years, and then transfer to other job or quit driving taxis.
This study suggests that the service education on taxi drivers should be conducted to increase the level of taxi service. The taxi zones should also be enlarged more and more by uniting taxi zones to eliminate extra taxi fare. On the other hand, the taxi fare system should be improved for taxi drivers to get sufficient income.
This study also suggests that the evaluation on taxi service and companies should be conducted more times to collect the taxi data as well as to improve the level of taxi service by the taxi department of Gyeonggi-Do. The evaluation could get the diverse taxi information on taxi passengers as well as drivers, level of taxi service, company’s business conditions and so on.
Moreover, the data personnel should be more arranged for managing diverse taxi information, and should analyze the data of TIMS(Taxi operation Information Management System) in Gyeonggi-Do. The data specialist should make a taxi master plan by using lots of taxi information collected by the TIMS.
