The purpose of this research is to find out how to teach reading of students argumentative essays, based on the relationship with writer's thinking process.
Many students do not know how to argue for their views on issues based on rational reasons and only write out stereotyped statements when they are asked to write argumentative essays. Students need to learn how to think for themselves and to form their own views in a responsible way. The ability to express to support their views could be developed by learning how to write argumentative essays.
This research compares four different views on argumentative essays and clarifies some definitions of argumentative terms, typical characteristics and composing elements of augumentative essays. It also applies the four views to analyzing an essay and chooses Dr. Lee's model most suitable for Korean students.
Through the research, I arrive at a conclusion that critical reading should come first in order to write argumentative essays and practice following writer's thinking process. In this step, teachers should specify the problem-solving process to students. In addition, meta-cognition is recommended to realize and examine students' thinking process.
In summary, teaching writing needs to be closely connected with teaching reading and teachers should focus on cultivating students' abilities to think critically and creatively.
