This study investigates the effects of writing task types in the Level 2 of the National English Ability Test(NEAT) on Korean EFL learners" English writing performance. The participants were 114 students with different levels of English proficiency (basic, intermediate, and advanced) attending a high school in Korea. Each student was asked to write two timed essays: one is a personal opinion essay and the other is an argumentative essay writing. Participants" written production was evaluated on five-scale analytic rating rubric covering the area of content, organization, and language use modified from He and Shi(2012). The results of Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) tests are as follows: 1) students performed better on personal opinion essay writings than argumentative essay writings regardless of writing features, 2) the argumentative essay writing produced lower scores on content due to poor quality and development of ideas, and 3) students also scored lower on language on the argumentative essay writing task because of shorter essays, and more language errors. Post-test interviews confirmed that participating students were challenged by the argumentative essay writings that required explicit position taking, their own additional reasons to develop the ideas. The study draws attention to the importance of developing appropriate writing tasks and classroom-based writing lessons for the National English Ability Test.
