This study explores David Hume’s theory of the origin of religion, who, with Adam Smith, is representative of The Scottish Enlightenment and a radical empiricist philosopher. As a thoroughgoing proponent of empirical philosophy, Hume refuted the argument from design, in which the foundation of religion is to be laid on the basis of theoretical reasoning. And he asserts that the sole foundation of religion is human experiences such as passion, sensation and emotion. For him, religion is the fruit of human imagination, which is no other than human instinct and human passion identified by him with human nature itself. Norman Kemp Smith maintains that Hume is not to be regarded as a radical skeptic, but to be reconceived as an advocate for naturalistic philosophy based on natural belief as the central basis of our ordinary lives. Although the self, the external world, and causality are, in the eye of Hume, not real but constituted by human imagination, human beings have a natural inclination to believe in their substantiality. The same is true of religious belief. It is, therefore, meaningless to rationally justify religious belief. Religious belief is a construct of human imagination and passion. In the face of crises such as death, illness, or natural disaster, human beings are naturally seized with fear and hope. These passions associated with human imagination easily give rise to the idea of God.
