The purpose of this study was to grope the methods of improvement for student-directed teaching behaviors of elementary school teachers(EST) in physical education classes. This study designed by Mathison`s(1988) thangulation. All subjects were selected in Pusan, Taegu, and Kyungpook. The subjects of questionnaire were EST(N=300, 150 females and 150 males). These subjects were conducted by the nonproportional stratified sampling. The subjects of informants were teaching interns(N=3, 2 females and 1 males) by the purposive sampling. The subjects of instruction analysis were total 36. These subjects were grouped eighteen females(each 6: 3.2 ± 1.7 years, 7.8±1.7 years, and 14.4 ± 2.2 years) and 18 males(each 6: 3.2±1.8 years, 7.8±1.6 years, and 14.6±2.0 years). According to results, the self-evaluation level on student-directed teaching behaviors of FST was very high. The self-evaluation level on positive feedback of EST was supported by the reports of informants and the results of instruction analysis. But the self-evaluation level on questioning was not in accordance with interpretations of the informants and the observers. On the one hand, EST presented alternative proposals for student-directed teaching behaviors in physical education classes through the their free discussion. The teacher`s recognition diversion, the application of rules for preventive management, the reduction of number of student per class, and the enlargement of opportunity for teacher training were included among the principal proposals.
