In second language (L2) performance assessment, rater variability has long been recognized as a potential threat to the validity of testtakers’ performance scores (AERA, APA, & NCME, 1999; Bachman, 2004; Bachman, Lynch, & Mason, 1995). Studies on L2 speaking assessments have identified where raters show differences; however, they have not yet explored why they show diverse rating patterns. To this end, this study examined the extent to which raters’ experience affects their scoring behavior in an L2 speaking assessment. Six raters, who were categorized as novice, developing, and experienced raters based on their teaching and rating experience, scored six examinees’ responses to a semi-direct speaking test consisting of eight tasks. The examinees’ performances were scored on six predetermined components of speaking ability. While scoring using the analytic scoring criteria, the raters were asked to verbalize how they reached certain score decisions. The analysis of raters’ ratings through a many-facet Rasch measurement model and the qualitative analysis of verbal reports showed distinctive rating behaviors of the three groups, especially in terms of degrees of dependence on the scoring criteria. The findings contribute to a better understanding of raters’ scoring processes, and consequently, to more effective rater training.
