The purpose of this study is to explore Calvin’s contribution to the changes of orders in Europe. Existing literature of Calvin and Calvinism appear to concentrated on the discussion of theology, humanities studies, or his discussion of state. International relations literature also pay little attention to Calvin although the Peace of Westphalia has been recognised as a threshold of a new era of modern international relations that are based on sovereign states.
Calvin’s political thoughts and organization of churches appear to contain republican values though his posture on the right to resistance against oppressive government or an ideal polity remains vague. His religious reform, however, fueled contradictions between various existing norms which facilitated the emergence of a new norms. States, either Catholic or Protestant in their religious identities, that were changing the supremacy of Catholic Church, often employed contradicting attitude towards various religious groups within their own territories in their pursuit of religious integrity. Such a contradiction resulted in the differentiation of political actors, which provided modern sovereign states with a solid basis of development.
