The official female entertainers, Kisaeng in the Choson period, were required to supply artistic accomplishment and sexuality for upper class males. These premodern female entertainers fell into confusion while being reconstructed in colonial Korea. State-regulated prostitution introduced by the colonial power reorganized the Kisaeng group as modern prostitutes by excluding hierarchy in Kisaeng system and the traditional value of premodern salon culture. The subordination of Kisaeng to Kibu(the pseudo-husband and manager of Kisaeng) and their sexual services given as a task seems to have caused them to be regarded as a prostitute group from the modern perspective. By the way, the standardization of kwan'gi(the legitimate Kisaeng) and sampe(the lower level of Kisaeng) shows that artistic accomplishment, irrespective of the hierarchy, began to be redistributed in the modem mass business system as a commodity. The first new association of Kisaeng reveals the disorder between compulsory institutional power and multilateral reality inside the Kisaeng group.
However, passing through the gap between the new system and reality, Kisaeng tried to recognize themselves as individual professional performers and to build their own organization free from the control of the Kibu. This divergence of art and sexuality in Kisaeng produced a different kind of performer from the Kisaeng group, such as the great traditional singers or modern entertainers. However, in this transformation, Kisaeng ceased to exist as pre-modern entertainers in history.
