The very reason for the existence of Kisaengs was to direct their body and mind geared for other people. This implies that their role had varied depending on the counterparts as well as changing socio-cultural situations. For example, in Chosun Dynasty, the traditional kisaengs who accompanied state guests and those in aristocratic class were trained by the state poetry, writing, painting, singing and dancing to be able to fulfill their professional duties. However, during the Japanese imperialist ruling, they were entered into customized, specific and practical job training programs in Gweonbeon, a Japanese establishment for training professional kisaengs, for the purpose of entertaining their guests. Basic knowledge and skills for a trade and practicable job competence is called ‘job literacy’. The job literacy for a kisaeng features effective communication flair as well as entertainment aspects through artistic and refined qualities. In other words, the education and training entailed studies in humanities and fine arts, but the sole purpose was to amuse other people. However, such other-oriented job literacy of kisaengs, ironically, brought out their inner maturity.
For the first time in 1927, the kisaengs freely and publically voiced their self-identities through Janghan. Janghan is the first periodical publication by kisaengs; this significant development the objectified women in the field, in the then extremely male-dominant society, an effective medium to channel their voices together as a community. Through Janghan, in which Kisaengs discussed their counter stories against master-narrative, we could glimpse into their self-consciousness, social-awareness, and predicaments in Korea"s enlightenment period.
