In 1923, which is 4 years after he published two works, namely <The Sorrow of the Weak> and <O Thou the Shallow Hearted>, both having New Woman as heroine, Kim Dong In publishes <When the Eyes were Hardly Opened> which focuses on the life of a Kisaeng. Despite the time space of 4 years and heterogeneity of the subject , the work <When the Eyes were hardly Opened> can be identified as an extension of the said two works. Here the concern of the contemporaries about improvement of women's estate plays an important role, because the oppositional plot, i.e. New Women vs Kisaeng, or ,strictly speaking, the contrast between the life of rising New Women and the life of falling Kisaeng, owes much to the general cognizance of contemporaries towards the equality of man and women. Although the work <When the Eyes were Hardly Opened> employs a poignant oppositional plot , the conflict between a Kisaeng and a Girl Student, as the theme of the work, the despair of the Kisaeng which she suffers in her contemporary society is diluted in the work through the revival of traditional world such as the Feast of Dan O Jul and the Feast of the Eighth Day of April, and the Girl Student is approved of her value only through the form of a marriage. Consequently, in the work <When the Eyes were Hardly Opened> a mere conceptual world presented by Kim Dong In remains instead of the reality of the time, and that is non other thing than the world of pre-modern era which is symbolized by the revel of Kisaeng.
