This argues how the identity and future ministries of Korean churches will be formed and prepare for Korea’s multicultural society. It will lead Korean churches to transform from monolithic traditional churches to multicultural churches.
At present Korean society faces severe issues such as ultra-low birth rate and super-aging, and at the same time, Korean economics due to a lack of labor. Overcoming them, many solutions are coming up. One of them is publically an “active influx of migrants”. Accordingly, the number of migrants in Korea is, in 2023, 2,507,584 people. In other words, it presents 4.89% of the entire population of South Korea as migrants. Most experts consider a country to have entered a 'multicultural society' when the foreign population exceeds 5% of the total population.
This shows that in some areas of Korea, serious 'immigrant concentration' is already taking place. In addition, unprepared domestic residents are dissatisfied with their multicultural life, immigrants are confused about their multicultural situation, and have difficulty adapting to life in Korea. The ever-expanding phenomenon of 'immigrant concentration' is spreading throughout all regions of Korea and is also closely reflected in education, work, and living situations. As a result, the government and local governments feel threatened by 'social integration' and are trying to present and implement various measures.
However, Korean churches are maintaining traditional methods of foreign evangelism or overseas missions in this situation. During the COVID-19 situation, Korean churches have suffered a great blow to their church membership and a crisis of identity. Many evangelism methods and theological countermeasures are being proposed to overcome this, but pastoral and missionary methods are not being discussed in response to social changes.
This paper insists that a contemporary Christian faith community should be formed quickly with the identity of a "multicultural mission church" in light of the current situation in Korean society. This multicultural faith community as a "multicultural mission church" can be the most appropriate missionary subject in the global mission field, which is changing due to globalization. For example, it presents the ministry of the "Onnuri Mission Church of the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea" near "Hambak Village" in Yeonsu-gu, Incheon, one of the immigrant-dense areas.
