The genocide of Europe's Jews in World War II compels Christianity to ask about its shared responsibility for this catastrophe, because even if no direct lines can be drawn to the racism of National Socialism, it remains undeniable that in German Protestantism in the 19th century anti-Judaist and anti-Semic ideas gained acceptance. There are mainly two people. The ominous sentence that the Jews are our misfortune comes from the Protestant historian Heinrich Treitschke, whose work shaped the historical image of the German bourgeoisie. Within the church, the pastor Adolf Stöcker is one of the main people responsible for the increasing acceptance of anti-Semitic views. Because by making the Jews responsible for the problems and upheavals of the rapid modernization process, he created a scapegoat who could be burdened with social problems and grievances. Even if his personal political efforts, such as founding a party, failed, he still managed to gain more recognition for anti-Semitic clichés within the church. This made it possible for the anti-Semitism of National Socialism to find points of contact within Protestantism in its hostility to modernity, which is why it remained largely silent after 1933 on the immediate exclusion and persecution of the Jews. This has made it imperative for Christians to face up to their moral responsibility for the murder of the Jews in the 20th century.
