The purpose of this study was to examine the notation pattern of Korean traditional music songs included in the 2015 revised curriculum elementary and secondary music textbooks, and to present the notation method and the direction of improvement of the selection of Korean music songs. To this end, the notation pattern of Korean traditional music songs in the revised 2015 elementary and secondary music textbooks was divided into issues of key signature, time signature, bars, Si-gim-sae, cadence, structure of the music, and length of the music and analyzed. And based on the analyzed patterns, the direction of improvement of each issue was presented. In addition, the direction of improvement in the selecting method of Korean traditional music for textbooks was presented. As a result, first, the songs utilized in school education are mainly folk songs and nursery rhymes so they should be selected in consideration of regional diversity and characteristics. Second, scores of various difficulties of the same music should be presented for each grade so that they can have a hierarchy in the length of the music, the complexity of sigimsae, and the usability of the lyrics. Third, the title that popular folk songs prioritize universality and popularity, local folk songs prioritize function and regionality, and nursery rhymes prioritize their use. The lyrics should be presented using dialect, but as many type of lyrics as possible should be provided so that they can be selected and used in a variety of educational ways in the school field. Considering the method of notation Korean traditional music and the direction of improvement of Korean traditional music selecting method suggested in this study, it is expected to satisfy the consistency and unity of Korean traditional music scores, which are necessary conditions for the development of Korean traditional music education.
