The Hyulgujinseong was one of the most important military camps on Gangwha Island since the three-kingdoms period of Korea, but it has not been noticed by many scholars. The Hyulgujinseong was briefly mentioned in the history text 'Soksujeungbogangdoji,' which was published in 1935. This paper will analyze archaeological excavations, remains, as well as written records. First, comparing the Hyulgujinseong to the Jangdotoseong and the Dangseong (fortress wall), there are no similar attributes in terms of construction techniques and its structures. Recovered artifacts also indicate that the Hyulgujinseong was not a military camp. Second, considering the geographical conditions and structures, the Hyulgujinseong was most likely a horse ranch rather than a military camp. The size, structure, and construction techniques of the Hyulgujinseong were very close to that of horse ranches in the southwest area of Korean Peninsular during the Joseon Dynasty. Third, considering geographical conditions and ancient topographies of Cheonghaejin and Dangseongjin (military camps) was possibly located at Oepori, Gangwha Island. Deep in the hidden gulf and surrounded by rugged mountain ranges, Oepori was an advantageous location for a military camp.
