This study is to analyze the composition of the military officer in the Late Goryeo Period and the function and role within the organization and to seek the detailed operation status. Through this, it is to analyze the current status of the military offices in the Late Goryeo Period in details. Also, it verifies the principle of Yangban officer system and the operation status of the military system.
First, the period for the study subjects is from the establishment of the military regime to the demise of the Goryeo dynasty. Within this period, there were endless provocations locally and from overseas. Naturally, the military force had to come out often and the activities of the military officer became viable. Furthermore, foreign countries started ti intervene politically and in order to shake them off, movements of restoring the right for self-autonomy were enacted. Socially, it was a era of severe chaos.
Accordingly, a lot of extraneous people were introduced into the military officers. Their role became very various as well. Along with the eccentric role of leading the military source, they had to work on various tasks. They also took part in roles controled by the previous civil officers. They even took roles of a translator-interpreter also.
Therefore, the makeup of one’s ancestry that wanted to be a military officer became various. Previously, among the soldiers, one who had outstanding martial arts or ones who had obvious military achievements became a military officer. Also, there were lot of people who became a military officer through protected appointment which is based on one’s background of one’s family. However, due to the various path coming from the chaos, various people were able to become a military officer. From a first-ranked children of a royal family to officers, commoner, lowly class, slave, monk and even foreigners were able to become a military officer.
As extraneous people were quite included, the dynamics of the military officer order became quite loose. However, as they organically harmonized with each other taking their roles, they were able to overcome several nationals crises. However, confrontation and collision between the people with different backgrounds were inevitable. That became the main catalyst to the demise of the Goryeo dynasty.
