Jeompiljae Kim Jong-Jik (1431~1492) was an eminent scholar who had contributed to implementing Neo-Confucianism in the Joseon Dynasty. He put a great effort to foster disciples as a leading head of numerous scholars in Neo-Confucianism and to transmit its philosophy in the Joseon society of his time. His academic interest was in practicing and fulfilling ethics based on the teachings from Sohak. He inherited the rich complexity of the Sohak thought from his own father, Kim Suk-ja, and practiced what he had learned. He had come to realize how important mind cultivation was then he started to concentrate on cultivating his mind. Because of this was that practicing ethics and cultivating the mind are deeply co-related to each other. Such an academic trend is called practicing ethics. He took pleasure in expressing these philosophical ideas in a form of poetry. Therefore, this paper puts an in-depth study of his philosophical thought in his poems. The result of analyzing his poems revealed a lot of traits in mind practice. In terms of his poems, his mind practice was also greatly influenced by meritorious thought from Sohak and ideas of the Tao in Zhongyong. This perspective has never been explored by other researches. His philosophical ideas in featured his poems were cultivating the mind, having the passion of disposition, attaining a great truth, enlightening the world, and defeating heresy. These ideas bring to the fundamental academic principle which is mind cultivation. He had a strong will for seeking the truth and tried to implement the great truth in his life. While educating the world based on his study, he also had a great intention to defeat heresy. Insights in his philosophy could be a significant contribution to bring light and life to this heartless modern society.
