Refferring to the revised National Curriculum Standard published by the Ministry of Education in March, 1987, new subject matter named as the Industrial Technology/Home Economics(IT/HE) is shown. It gives the junior high school principals the choise to offer either IT course for boys and HE course for girls only as it has traditionally been offered or IT/HE for all without any sex segregation in the school. Among the professionals in the field of HE and IT education, endless arguments about the structuring content of IT/HE have been continued. While the IT side insists that the most of IT content offered separately for boys only should be included in the IT/HE, the HE side does that the majority of HE content offered for girls only should be included as the essential parts of IT/HE. This author views IT/HE as one subject matter, not a combination of two traditional ones. The required subject matter offered in the junior high school should be based on the body of knowledge which comes from human cultural heritage. To the primitives, the place where they did every productive activities for survival was the place where they stayed and managed home economics, and every activity for survival was the means of daily existence. The origin of technology is, therefore, viewed same as that of home economics. The dress making activity in the traditional home economic class, for example, can be adopted as the content of IT/HE class activity to understand how the raw materials are processed to increase their value for human needs and to understand the modern garment instustry, product delivery system, people working in this industry. Same is true in food making activity. The paper presented the structural model of IT/HE subject matter. Learning small gasoline engine must be based on the context of transportation technology development. In the same way, learning computer must be based on the context of communication technology development. There must be the body of knowledge from which the teaching content of IT/HE subject matter, otherwise it could not be recognized as the essential subject matter for all in the junior high school.
