The purpose of this paper is to examine the process and manner of the Nerchinsk Conference to see if it was a imitation of a simple Western order or whether it contained the unique character of Central Eurasia. The paper also focuses on the efforts of ambassadors to negotiate between Ch’ing and Russia before the Treaty of Nerchinsk. Through this, we try to find out the hybrid characteristics of the historical conference in Nerchinsk and the effects of these hybrids on the coexistence of the two countries.
The Nerchinsk Treaty was not the first treaty of China with the West, but rather an international agreement between the two empires of Central Eurasia. Above all, the Nerchinsk Conference was not a Western European model. Looking at the diplomatic culture of Ch’ing and Russia in the 17th century, Nerchinsk Conference was a result of acceptance and hybridity of various diplomatic rituals between Ch’ing and Russia on the basis of inland Asian diplomatic culture. This was possible because both sides were willing to accept the other culture and to put more emphasis on practical interests than justification.
With Nerchinsk treaty, Ch’ing and Russia overcame the crisis of war and laid the foundation for coexistence that will last at least 150 years.
