The women in the pre-modern era followed the existing maternity and made it into the shape of their lives. The women who appear in 『Woman Carrying a Lamp』are not able to overthrow the world individually by their own will, but in the life process, crossing the age, they are gradually formed as individual subjects.
First, Young-hee’s mother-in-law, Mrs. Park and Mrs. Kim, a big daughter-in-law of Kim`s family and Gyeong-Jae’s Mother are both pre-modern women. They are all pre-modern women who seem to have been put in the framework of feudalism. Mrs. Park forced all other daughters-in-law to follow the severe pain of her young days, who were subject to norms. Gyeong-Jae’s Mother as a big daughter-in-law of Kim"s is a formed pre-modern subject.
Second, Yong-hee and Misako are women who have lived a new life through conscious awareness. Because they have practiced and challenged in any way through their own lives, they have opened up new paths of life and their lives have changed.
Third, it is difficult for us to define Wan-ogg and Og-bun as one person, but they aren’t self-reliant subjects themselves. Both have struggled to overcome the limitations of contemporary and subjective women in feudal social systems, but they are at the forefront of success and failure due to differences in status.
