This article starts from an issue that middle-class family has transformed into a political space in 1980’s causing considerable turbulence between family members. As repeatedly described in the Korean novels in 1980’s, parents of middle-class family had struggle with their children and wives had faced with lethargic and inverted snob husbands dismissed from their previous job of teachers or professors. It became an critical issue how to cope with the sudden rise of political conflict, and what changes may be caused by such a politicized family. What made the conflict more complicated was a situation that the radical child be a daughter, instead of a son. I focused on this issue that Hyang-Sook Kim’s story had radical daughter and their mothers as a protagonist. Her novel may provide an interesting point of view how the daughters and mothers, who were confined in a private sector, or family, and also were not able to have their own political voice, responsed to the dispute.
I described how a radical female college student was expressed in the novel in the Chapter 2, and also studied the complex map of feelings and emotions that her mother had on her “radical daughter.” In Chapter 4, I discussed a mechanism that transforms political judgement and interpretations into a mere ethics of “norm and morality” or a customary rules of “good and evil.” It ultimately turned into a situation that the mother had reminiscence of her individual sin, in front of torture and pain on her daughter. However, I also discussed that such reminiscence did not end in a emotional point of self-forgiveness but it has led into a atonement of her sins.
