In Korean modern literary history, the period of 1960s has been considered as 'age of new sensibility' or 'the moment of finding new self. It was widely agreed that the epistemological changes in those days stood on the basis of the spiritual innovation which was result from 4.19. In spite of its limitation as ideal revolution, 4.19 has opened new page of 'Geistesgeschichte' in Korea. On the basis of these appreciation of 4.19, this study examined the fictions which depicted 4.19, because pre-studies on this field have passed over individual works and have been founded on the somewhat transcendental convictions.
In chapter 2, fictions which described figures directly participated in the revolution were discussed. These works delivered the testimony of the actual scenes of 4.19 and critically revealed the cause of the revolution, the structural conflict of Korean society of that times. In chapter 3, the fictions which projected the feud between the ruler and the ruled into the conflict between the father and the son/daughter were investigated. In these works, the social conflict were replaced with family conflict and ideology of the rulers were described as 'the law of father'. In chapter 4, the meaning of 4.19 were rediscovered through the fictions which placed 4.19 as origin of today's civil and student movement. In these works, 4.19 was not described as 'failed revolution' but as 'continuous civil movement'. In chapter 5, fictions which treated 4.19 as the burst of internal desire were scrutinized. In these fictions, 4.19 gained personal meaning as well.
This study aims at supplementing the pre-studies on 'so-called 4.19 literature' by re-examining and re-finding individual works which described 4.19. That is because it is the first step to approach them. However, this research could be completed by investigating the works and the attitudes of the writer that were under influence of 4.19. In other words, it will remain as a task to be achieved to find the psychological and mental consequences on those who were in the literary field in those times.
