This article is a critical narrative analysis of John 18:28-19:16, which describes the trial of Jesus by the Roman authorities with a focus on the characterization and role of Pilate. e interrogation of Jesus before Pilate is structurally marked by seven scenes with Pilate moving either inside or outside of his Roman Praetorium. In these literary scenes one (A1), three (C1), five (C2), and seven (A2), Pilate comes out to the Jews (18:28-32; 38b-40; 19:4-8; 19:12-16a); in scenes two (B1), four (D), and six (B2), he goes back inside to Jesus (18:33-38a; 19:1-3; 19:9-11). The alteration of seven scenes eventually reveals the distinctive characterization of Pilate including other characters in John 18:28-19:16.
The trial scenes reveal the true characterization and role of Pilate as the Roman colonizing master of the Jews at that time. The Jewish authorities want Jesus to be tried under Roman law, as a criminal handed over to the Romans. The tension is caused by the power for execution resting with the oppressors (the Roman colonizers). For the Jews, Pilate is an obstacle they need to manipulate to carry out what they want to do. Pilate interrogates Jesus by asking if he is the “king of the Jews.” Pilate cannot find any wrong with Jesus. Pilate, however, taunts, insults, and ridicules the Jews by calling Jesus the king of the Jews, humiliating, beating, crowning him with thorns, and clothing him in a purple robe (19:1-3, scene four [D]). The Jews are upset at being humiliated in this way and demand Jesus’ death. Pilate tauntingly tells the Jews to ‘do it yourselves.’ The Jews cannot do it; Pilate is only concerned if Jesus is an insurgent and a threat to the Roman empire. Pilate does not want the rumor to be circulated that he is not Caesar’s friend.
Pilate is a calculating politician who humiliates the Jews by lowering them to a position of absolute subjection to the imperial power. He is making fun of the Jews "pathetic" Jewish colonized nationalism. As a manipulative figure, he is trying to provoke the Jewish authorities to make the blasphemous confession: “We have no king but Caesar” (19:15). Pilate is portrayed as a very complex character.
