The Gospel of John was written in order to solidify the chrisotological faith of the Johannine community in the persecution and console it and encourage the mission in the world. These messages are well shown in the farewell sermon addressed to the disciples, who represent the Johannine community, besonders in John 15:18-16:4a.
This article aims to confirm these messages in John 5-10, the main text in John 2-12, where Jesus’ public life in the world is described.
Besides the christological message, which is particularly well shown in Jesus’ contention with the Jews depicted in these chapters, the fact that Jesus was severely persecuted by the Jews in John 5-10 has an effect to console the Johannine community in the persecution, as Jesus says in John 15:18-20. Not only the fact but also the reason for the persecution, which is described in John 15:19, 21 and is confirmed in John 5-10 contribute to this consolation.
Next, the prophecy of the witness of the Holy Spirit and the disciples in 15:26-27, which is written between both consolations in the persecution in John 5:18-25 and John 16:1-4a, suggests the intention of John to encourage the Johannine community to bear witness of Jesus in persecution. This message can also be read in Chapter 5-10, where Jesus taught the Jews boldly in the persecution, which suggests the intention of John to encourage the reader to bear witness to Jesus in the persecution. This intention of John is confirmed in the story of the blind man, who bore witness to Jesus in the face of the excommunication and was cast out being condemned as a sinner. The blind man is presented to the Johannine community as an exemplary disciple. After being cast out Jesus found him and reversed the Judgement of Jews in John 9:34. This reversing of the judgement is not only to console the Johannine community, but also to encourage it to bear witness to Jesus in the face of the persecution.
In conclusion we can find out that John wrote John 5-10 not only in order to console the Johannine community in the persecution but also to encourage it to bear witness to Jesus in the face of the persecution of Jews after the model of Jesus and the blind man as an exemplary disciple.
