This paper suggests that Mark exposes the shameful reality of the Roman Empire through his descriptions of Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea, and the centurion, a Roman military commander. Our gospel writer attempts to provide his community with a critical perspective on the empire and, also, with spiritual strength to stand the empire’s violent rule. Mark tries to enable his community to endure ruthless reign by the empire.
Mark’s portraits of Pontius Pilate and the centurion reflect the gospel writer’s critical stance on the Roman Empire. Pilate and the centurion are responsible for Jesus’ death. The Roman governor sentences Jesus to death by crucifixion. The Roman commander carries out the governor’s ruling. They both act in the emperor’s name. Our evangelist, nevertheless, describes those two Romans as shameful figures. Pilate is an incompetent ruler who failed to decide on Jesus’ case against the Jewish leaders. As misunderstanding Jesus’ identity, the centurion switches his loyalty to the crucified one from the emperor. Pilate’s and the centurion’s dishonor is transferred to the emperor and his dominion. The emperor counts upon those disrespectable and unreliable vessels in order to rule his domain. Mark helps his community perceive this shameful reality of the conqueror. He wants his community not to be overwhelmed by the empire’s ruthless power, but to stand strong through afflictions by the empire. In this regard gaining the critical perspective on the empire is crucial to Mark and his community.
