The purpose of this essay is to examine the lyrical feature in Hwang, Soon-won´s <Trees Standing on a Slope>. This novel is illustrative of nature and forms of the lyrical novel. <Trees Standing on a Slope> exploits the expectation of narrative by turning it into its opposite, a ´lyrical process´. That moves toward a moment of recognition in each of the characters on the road to salvation. In the lyrical process the theme and contents are displayed in constellations of symbols. The ´symbolic heroes´ in <Trees Standing on a Slope>, Dong-ho and Hyon-tae project the conflict between self and world into their internal worlds. The split of mind and body or ideal and reality in their inner selves reflects the modern dissociation of existence especially in a state of war and postwar. Dong-ho and Hyon-tae grope for the integration of existence in the reverse directions to each other. One mirrors and reflects inversely the other. Through the symmetrical composition of them based on the structural dichotomy in this novel, we are made aware of their essential identity. They are divided lyrical selves as the masks of the author representing his double-faced view of the world. The two lyrical selves dramatize an internal conflict of the author and symbolize it objectively. Each narrative of them runs parallel simultaneously transcending the causal and temporal movement. The structural counterpoint in this novel makes it possible the opposites to reconcile and harmonize beyond time. In the end the divided standpoints are unified by the novel´s resolution as a whole. The integration is reached in maternity, a symbol for the union of opposites. That is also the final image of salvation. The symbolic end in this novel speaks for Hwang, Soon-won´s lyrical vision. <Trees Standing on a Slope> represents the essential impulse of the lyrical novel to cope with the modern dissociation.
