Byolgwa Gachi Salda is the first novel of Hwang, Soon-won who designed his short-stories for the aesthetic completion and the lyrical effect. Byolgwa Gachi Salda presents continuities and similarities to his short-stories. The purpose of this essay is to examine the lyrical quality in this novel and moreover to understand the authorial intention in Hwang, Soon-won's works.
At first, I consider the voice and the focalization of narration in Byolgwa Gachi dda. The dynamic and compound narrative mode, composed with ommniscient and limited points of view, or authorial and figural narritive situations, is found in this novel The ommniscience contributes not only to the progress of story but also to the mood of folklore. It is the latter that relates to the lyrical effect and world-view of this novel. There is a correlation between the lyricism and the folklore in aspect of the primordinal union of the self and the world. The legendary narrative mode, in addition, does much for creating the character of 'Gomnyo' who represents the nature of primordinal purity. In this novel the figural narrative situations are focalized on 'Gomnyo'. Internal focalization is effective to give expression to her point of view stands in for Hwang, Soon-won's lyrical vision. Focalized on her, in adition, the emotional effect increases.
The next point of discussion is on the plot and the structure in Byo!gwa Gachi Solda. It is composed with the analogous episodes standing in a row. It is the unique plot as a lyrical novel that repetation of meanings and accumulation of emotions through the series of episodes. The lyrical form is found also in epiphany and open ending. In each episode the undamaged purity of 'Gomnyo' is opposite to the vulgarity of the real world. In the end her innate virtue unifies the real world. The ending of this work shows the lyrical vision of the author significantly.
