What could be the theoretical utility of bringing erōs into the dialogue on justice? Socrates, as he leads the discussion in Plato’s Republic, describes both the most just man and the most unjust man that emerge in the narrative—the philosopher and the tyrant—as essentially erotic men. As there is no apparent dramatic constraint for Socrates to invoke eros in the Republic while the word philia immediately recommends itself for an explication of the meaning of philosophia, Socrates’ approach in Book 6 to philosophy through eros poses us a question. On the other hand, his choice to deploy eros in his description of the philosophic nature does not bar him from deploying it again to describe a tyrannical soul in Book 9. This essay suggests that Socrates unpacks to align the diverse aspects of eros in a deliberate sequence, enabling himself to move away from the apparently ascetic strain of the discussion of justice up to Book 4. It turns out that what virtue we can derive from the faculty of reason fundamentally depends on the soul’s desire for what is good in itself.
