A film transfers source messages into target text through screen, actors" utterances, and sound. It is likely that with its characteristic we need to search the approach of subtitling translation, which has the difference of linguistic structures and features between mother tongue and foreign language. Futhermore, the message transfer of film relays through those channels. They are applied to subtitling at the same time, and it includes these information on written form.
This study tried to explore methods of analysis of subtitling translation with basis on the American-into-Korean film, No Reservation(2007) and Something gotta give(2004). In process of observing subtitling, we could find that its temporal and spatial limit restrict target translation. Within up to 3-4 seconds, subtitling occurred contracted form or ellipsis of partial utterance. These translated forms could be frequently found on the subtitling. Besides, utterance contexts of actors have influenced them, and most of the utterances showed
cohesive and coherent relations with previous utterances. Utterances helped to treat rearrangement or transformation of target text. In case of visual channel, signs such as objects, colors, and paralinguistic modes etc used to replace messages of utterances. Particularly, the screen without actor"s speech transferred message by relying on only visual codes, and audiences could read written forms on screen.
These three factors like temporal and spatial limit, utterance, and visual code enabled the translation of target text to analyze as a useful tool. Integrated approach for subtitling seems to be composed of these factors, and is useful to analyze translated target text.
