Virtue ethics has been criticized to be inappropriate for normative theory because it can not provide action guidance for us. Some contemporary virtue theorists have answered to such a criticism by giving virtue ethical accounts of right action. The purpose of this study is to investigate Rosalind Hursthouse"s account of right action which often counts as a standard one among virtue ethical accounts of right action and then to examine how successful it is in verifying the action guiding force of virtue ethics. Hursthouse"s account comes to weaken the force in question more than it intends to admit since it understands the primacy of character in a moderate sense. Moreover, when it takes a virtuous agent to be a real human being it brings about some situations in which it is difficult for a virtuous agent to play as a criterion of rightness. It is pretty significant that Hursthouse does not grasp such kinds of dichotomy as action and agent, duty and virtue, and rightness and goodness in an exclusive way. Theexamination of Hursthouse"s account, however, reveals how difficult it is for virtue ethics to have a clear criterion on rightness insofar as it sticks to its own basic position.
