One of the hotly debated problems in virtue ethics is its empirical inappropriateness that has been raised by situationist social psychologists. Many situationists insist that the character-based explanation of behavior is not empirically supported by the experimental researches of social psychology. In responding to situationism some virtue ethicists pay attention to practical wisdom(phronesis). They intend to defend the existence of character traits while they acknowledge the influence of situation on behavior-decision. According to these virtue ethicists the choice through phronesis has two important features which shows the misunderstanding of situationists on virtue and character traits. Firstly, right actions through phronesis depend on situations since virtuous agents reflect situational features in making a choice. Secondly, right choices through phronesis are not to be consistent in doing a specific action or expressing a specific character trait but to pursue for the good from the perspective of a whole life and to compromise various virtues. This kind of response seems to reveal that situationism is not a fatal criticism on virtue ethics. However it has to pay a price for defending the existence of character traits. It may either give a wrong explanation of behavior or bring about some problems with regard to action-guidingness, motivatingness and moral development. This limitation of the response through phronesis raises a doubt about the relevance of agent-centered moral judgment itself.

덕윤리와 관련하여 최근에 활발하게 논의되고 있는 쟁점중의 하나는 상황주의사회심리학자들에 의해 제기된 덕윤리의 경험적 부적합성문제이다. 상황주의자들은 사회심리학의 다양한 실험연구들을 제시하면서 덕윤리자들의 인격에 근거한 행위설명이 경험적으로 입증되지 않는다고 비판한다. 상황주의자들은 사람들의 인격보다 사람들이 처한 상황이 행위결정을 설명하는 더 강력한 요소라고 주장한다. 상황주의자들의 이러한 비판에 대응할 때 유덕한 인격안의 실천적 지혜를 중시하는 덕윤리자들은 상황적 요소가 행위결정에 영향을 미친다는 것을 인정하면서 상황주의적 비판으로부터 인격개념을 지켜내고자 한다. 이들에 따르면 실천적 지혜를 통한 올바른 선택은 두 가지 면에서 상황주의적 도전이 덕윤리에 대한 잘못된 이해에 근거하고 있음을 보여준다. 먼저 실천적 지혜를 가진 유덕한 사람은 상황적 요인들을 잘 파악해서 상황에 적합한 올바른 행위를 선택하여 수행하기 때문에 덕윤리적 맥락에서 올바른 행위는 상황에 따라 다를 수 있다. 또한 실천적 지혜를 통한 올바른 선택은 전반적인 삶의 관점에서 좋음을 추구하고 여러 덕들을 통일적으로 아우르는 차원에서 무엇이 올바른지를 선택하기 때문에 특정한 행위나 단일의 인격 특질에 초점을 두고 일관되게 행위하는 것과는 구별된다. 실천적 지혜를 통한 덕윤리적 대응은 일면 상황주의자들이 인격특질이 없다는 것을 보이는데 성공하지 못했음을 그리고 그들의 도전이 덕윤리를 버릴 만큼 치명적이지 않음을 보여주는 듯하다. 그러나 실천적 지혜를 통해 상황주의적 도전에 대응하는 접근은 인격특질을 구해내는 대신에 나름의 대가를 치러야 한다. 즉 이러한 접근은 덕을 실제적 차원에서 이해할 경우 행위결정을 잘못 설명할 위험성이 있다. 또한 덕을 이상적 차원에서 이해할 경우 행위지침과 동기유발의 차원에서 문제를 야기할 뿐만 아니라 덕윤리의 중요한 특성을 훼손하게 된다. 실천적 지혜를 통한 덕윤리적 대응이 이러한 한계를 가진다는 사실은 덕윤리의 근본 입장, 즉 행위자의 인격특질을 도덕판단의 근간으로 삼는 입장이 과연 적절한지에 대해 의구심을 갖게 만든다.
