“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all(2 Corinthians 13:14).” This verse highlights the first aspect of Koinonia, which is the relationship between God and human beings through the Holy Spirit. God the Father wants to share his generosity and grace with us in the light of the Holy Spirit, which hereby suggests the origin of Koinonia. The Holy Spirit connects us to the communication between human beings and God. The second aspect of Koinonia is the special fellowship between God and human beings. In this sense, Koinonia also indicates the special relationship between people, the Holy Spirit, and God, which signifies that the fellowship between me, other christians, and God is deeply related to one another. Our relationship with God is affected by how well we get along with others in church. Another aspect of Koinonia extends to the social behavior level. The eight examples of Koinonia appeared in the bible denote conversation, distribution, and participation. In the New Testament, it refers to giving and receiving material support, moral and faithful participation, and enduring hardship.
This study divides Koinonia into two parts, John’s Koinonia and Paul’s Koinonia. First, John’s Koinonia again divides into two characteristics, the active fellowship accelerating Koinonia, and the purifying Koinoia. Second, Paul’s Koinonia is split into three: in God, in Chirst, and in the Holy Spirit. In the second chapter, the eleven characteristics of Koinonia in practice is suggested based on Ralph P. Martin’s theory. These characteristics of Koinonia in practice denote not only meditation prayer but also prayer in community, faith in Koinonia, Diakonia, Qusia, Agape, Ekklesia, Proskunetes. These are all evidence that we are involved with a healthy and active fellowship by sharing bread in God, which binds us together in unity that gives glory to God. Therefore, Koinonia is our mission of sharing the one faith toward our God the Father Almighty, and the devotion taking responsibility for our community.
