The 16th century Reformation was a turning point in the Christian history of 2,000 years. At that time, the reformers, with their various backgrounds and and environments, defeated the darkness of the medieval one thousand years under one common purpose and newly established the traditions of the early Church. Among the various factors leading to true salvation, the fact that it is attained only through the Scripture, faith, and grace was emphasized.
Among the Reformers, John Calvin especially emphasized the importance of the Word of God and asserted that the Word was the source of everything. According to him, a fallen human being can never realize the grace of salvation let alone the creative ministry of God. He likened the Bible to a pair of glasses and said that through the Bible alone can one learn that God is the creator of the universe as well as the sole ruler of all things, as well as the fact that Jesus Christ is the mediator through whom one can receive salvation. In the process, Calvin stressed the importance of God"s Word, the Bible, above the tradition and authority of the Church that the Roman Catholics claimed most superior.
The Bible does not depend on the judgment or interpretation of any particular person or institution such as the Church, but can reveal the truth by itself. This is the sole authority of the Bible, showing that the Holy Spirit of God is the only author of the Bible. Therefore, because God is the only one who can communicate correctly to man, no one can accept the Word with certainty without the inner light of the Holy Spirit.
