One peculiar phenomenon in today's Korean Church is that most Christians (lay people as well as clergy) would like to identify themselves to be 'evangelical.' They believe that they are heirs of the early Korean Church that they think was also 'evangelical.' They understand 'evangelical' in a very narrow sense of the word; that is, they think it is related to theological conservatism. Scholars, including Church historians, especially those from the conservative camp, have tried to verify this popular belief. The Korean Church, according to them, has been 'evangelical.' that is, conservative, from the beginning.
'Evangelical/ism' in its modern sense of the word is very difficult to define. Part of the difficulty is its ancient history that dates back to the gospel of Jesus Christ and Protestant Reformation. Like all other things with long history, 'evangelical/ism' has changed its meaning through time. In the nineteenth century, however, it was equivalent to orthodox 'Protestant/ism.' For instance. the Evangelical Alliance, the largest international and interdenominational organization of the time, was a gathering of practically all major Protestant denominations in Europe and America. The Nine Articles, its theological basis, was a summary of the consensus of the various traditional Protestant confessions of faith.
The Korean Church has its own proof that 'evangelical' in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries meant mostly 'Protestant.' In 1905 six Protestant missions in Korea, which included all major Protestant missions except for the Anglican mission, formed the General Council of Evangelical Missions in Korea. The General Council's primary aim was to establish one unified, non-sectarian Protestant church in Korea. An examination of the history and works of this organization reveals that Korea missionaries also used 'evangelical' in the sense of 'Protestant.'
'Evangelical' in the early Korean Church meant different from what it means today. It was used to include all major traditions of Protestantism. Therefore, its connotation was much broader and more ecumenical than its modern usage. Missionaries and the early Korean Church, in this sense, should not be understood to be 'evangelical' in its narrow modern sense of the word.
