This thesis treats of the identity of Presbyterian Church of Korea in the 21th Century. The Identity of the Presbyterian Church of Korea(PCK) should be not only ‘Reformed’, but also ‘evangelical.’ The term ‘Reformed’ as the designation for a denomination or family of churches is a late-Reformation.
The writing of Reformed theology has been going on now for more than 450 years. Martin Bucer(1491-1551) published Grund und Ursach against the Roman Catholic Church in 1524. Huldreich Zwingli(1484-1531) published On True and False Religion, a major theological work, in 1525. John Calvin(1509-1564) published the first edition of the Institutes of the Christian Religion in 1536. The last volume of Karl Barth’s Church Dogmatics appeared in 1968. We can be justly proud as long as we remember that the word ‘Reformed’ denotes a task more than an accomplishment. “Ecclesia reformata semper reformanda est!” in accordance with the Word of God and through the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Reformation heritage bequeathed to evangelicalism the great ‘sloas’: sola scriptura, slous Christus, sola gratia, sloa fide. As a result, the emphases on the authority of the Bible and the sole salvific work of Jesus Christ leading to salvation by grace through faith alone have characterized evangelicals wherever they have found since the sixteenth century. The qualifying attribute ‘evangelical’ recalls both the New Testament and at the same time the Reformation of the sixteenth century. Therefore, it may be taken as a dual affirmation: the theology to be considered here is the one which, nourished by the hidden sources of the documents of Israel’s history, first achieved unambiguous expression in the writings of the New Testament evangelist, apostles, and prophets; it is also, moreover, the theology newly discovered and accepted by the Reformation of the sixteenth century. The expression ‘evangelical,’ however, cannot and should not be intended and understood in a confessional, that is, in a denominational and exclusive, sense. This is forbidden first of all by the elementary fact that ‘evangelical’ refers primarily and decisively to the Bible. Not all so-called ‘Protestant’ theology is evangelical theology. “Soli Deo Gloria!”
