Beginning and development of the international alliance movements of the evangelical churches in the rapid cultural and ideological changes in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries had the historical significance in that they were the first pursuit of the allied movement of the international evangelical churches on the basis of the biblical truth. The World Evangelical Alliance(WEA) is one of the typical organizations of those international movements. On the one hand, WEA and its historical predecessors criticized the ecumenical movement of the World Council of Churches(WCC) that has pursued the unity of the churches suitable to modern social values and political situations. On the other hand, WEA has also tried to overcome the extremely fundamental view that sharply separates the spiritual sphere from the secular sphere. Besides the serious financial difficulty, however, WEA still faces a more serious and fundamental problem how its structure and works represent the various religious understandings and the diverse theological positions of the evangelical churches in the world. In addition, the relationship with the other movements like WCC and Lausanne Movements is another important task for WEA with regard to its theological identity. Korean church needs to keep a close eye on the theological direction and the cooperation works of WEA concerning those issues before establishing the proper and profitable relationship with WEA in the future. For this need, this study reviews the historical origin of WEA in the first place. Then history and theological statements of the late nineteenth century British evangelical alliance movement and the early twentieth century American evangelical alliance movement, which WEA claims as its historical predecessors, are reviewed and analyzed. And the beginning, developing and present situation of WEA are examined from the historical and the theological perspectives. In conclusion possibility and limit of the sound relationship between the Korean conservative presbyterian churches and the WEA are briefly suggested.
