This article aims to reveal how Korean Protestant churches understand and respond to multicultural phenomena. It is composed of two parts: First, it examines Korean Protestantism’s framework for understanding multicultural phenomena in its society. Outwardly, it seems as though the progressive side accepts multiculturalism, while the conservative side stands against it, but there are circumstances which cannot be explained by this dichotomy. The conservative side has also started to accept multiculturalism and began mission work for immigrants and foreigners in Korea; Secondly, it investigates responses of Korean Protestant churches to multicultural phenomena in Korea. There have been changes in mission strategies, reformation of the structure of missionary organizations, and diversification of rituals to accommodate multiculturalism. Korean Protestant churches, which have been putting most of their efforts in overseas mission, are now showing interests in foreigners and immigrants in Korea, and are trying to reformulate their missionary strategies and organizations to correspond to multiculturalism. Until recently, major languages used during most church services for foreigners have been English, Chinese, and Japanese, but other languages, such as Vietnamese, Thai and Mongolian started to appear. Some churches have ordained pastors chosen from immigrants.
Korean Protestant churches’ responses to multiculturalism have some problems. Conservative churches mainly approach immigrants as targets of mission work, and this can lead to conflicts between the two groups. Also, the leaders of supporting organizations are mainly pastors and the immigrants are excluded from decision makings for consequential issues. In addition, undesirable competitions among supporting groups and churches are starting to show. If Korean Protestant churches continue mission work without resolving these issues, they will repeat the same mistakes as those of overseas mission.
