This study aims to explore the specifics of the ceramic trade and technological exchanges between Joseon and China during the Imjin War, the Jeongyu War, and the period of the Ming-Qing transition, in the context of the international political situation. By doing so, it seeks to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the changes in Joseon’s ceramic culture in the 17th century.
The 17th century was a period of significant political, economic, and social transformations in Joseon. Amid these changes, the international trade environment of Joseon unfolded in new ways, yet Chinese ceramics continued to be imported and consumed not only by the royal court but also by the general public. Chinese ceramics became a crucial reference point for Joseon’s own ceramic production, leading to efforts to imitate their forms in the royal kilns and the adoption of broader foot-ring styles, reflecting a proactive acceptance of Chinese technological influences.
Although ceramic production in Joseon temporarily declined after the wars, the 17th century saw the emergence of new kiln structures, such as the history-arch-shaped furnaces with increasingly wide openings from the firebox to the chimney, and the division of kiln interiors into multiple chambers. These changes were aimed at improving production efficiency and optimizing the flow of heat, which suggests influences beyond Joseon’s internal developments. Given that regions with more advanced ceramic technologies, such as Ming-dynasty Fujian and Guangdong, had a considerable impact, the potential for technological exchanges with these areas is explored in this study.
Thus, the 17th century ceramic exchanges between Joseon and China represent not just trade transactions, but also significant technological interactions. Further detailed investigations are needed regarding the kiln structures, kiln tools, and firing methods that link Joseon with Fujian and Guangdong. This paper highlights the importance of ongoing multi-dimensional exchanges involving goods, people, and technologies, even amid the political and diplomatic instability of the 17th century. Future archaeological studies and literature research will contribute to a richer understanding of the ceramic exchanges between Joseon and China during this period.
