This article examines what animal history is, focusing on recent developments in Anglophone historiography. Broadly defined, animal history refers to scholarly efforts to account for the pasts of animals and humananimal relationships, often responding—directly or indirectly—to the current planetary and ecological crisis. Narratives of animal history typically revolve around several key themes: animal representations, animal costs, animal resistance, and multispecies connectedness. It then discusses how these Anglophone works on Western animal history can engage with Asian history. One of the crucial messages that we, as historians and readers, can take from the historiography is the notion that “lternative” human-animal relations that are not necessarily modern are possible. Historians of animals will continue to (re)discover, reveal, and highlight historical facts and narratives that can contribute to making the planet a more livable co-habitat for multiple species.
