The objective of this study was to develop a practical capacity for children to live sustainable livelihoods through the verification of the effectiveness of the problem-based home-connected early childhood sustainable development education program. To this end, this program was conducted with 42 five-year-old childreans from two groups at K Kindergarten located in S city, along with their parents. To evaluate the effectiveness of the program, the ‘Early Childhood Ecological Nutrition Scale’ developed by Im Jin-kyung (2017) was used, and the ‘questionnaire on the recognition and willingness to practice of early childhood teachers on sustainable development’ from Yoo Sun-young (2014) was restructured and used to determine parents’ perceptions of the program. One-way covariate analysis was performed to determine an effect on children’s ecological literacy scale, and an independent sample t-test was conducted to further verify an effect on parents’ awareness and willingness to practice in relation to sustainable development. The results of the study showed that the problem-based home-connected early childhood sustainable development education program was effective in improving children’s ecological literacy and parents’ awareness of the subject as well as their willingness to practice in relation to the matter. These results provide a theoretical basis and useful implications for the future use of this program as an educational activity to help children form practical competencies in order to live sustainable livelihoods.
