This study explored the direction of education for sustainable development through geography. First, the paper examined how education for sustainable development differs from environmental education. After analyzing when and how education for sustainable development emerged in curriculum of Korea, the paper analyzed characteristics of education for sustainable development in high school social studies textbooks. Sustainable development is a development that considers the environmental, economic and social aspects together. If environmental education with a long tradition has been focused on environmental aspects, sustainable development education is a future-oriented education that encompasses all three aspects. And education for sustainable development is not only for specific subjects, it is a paradigm shift of education that must be integrated into the whole curriculum and school. However, education for sustainable development is closely related to geography. This is because geography coincides very well with the orientation of education for sustainable development as a holistic subject that explores relational aspects of various scales such as local, country, and global and relational aspects of human and environment. Education for sustainable development through geography will make an important contribution to the realization of environmental justice on a global scale.
