Mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) has been a vibrant research topic in the field of language education since the mid-2000s. With the development and widespread use of mobile environments, numerous studies have accumulated on the effectiveness of MALL. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive research on the topic. This study conducted a meta-analysis to synthesize the literature on MALL. Studies from 2006 to early 2022 were collected, and 32 cases from 28 studies were included based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. By reviewing the characteristics of the studies, this study identified variables that might influence the effectiveness of MALL (i.e., year of publication, learner characteristics, and experimental characteristics), and a meta-ANOVA (or meta-regression) was conducted. The results showed that the effect size of MALL on language performance was 0.711, indicating a high level of effectiveness. The analysis of moderators indicated that the effect size tended to increase over time, and a significant difference was observed based on learners’ language background (L1). In addition, higher effect sizes were found for mixed language skills, longer durations, and more than one tool, although these were not statistically significant. Based on these findings, suggestions for MALL and future research were presented.
