This study aims to investigate the overall effects of teaching General English language courses online for university students. A meta-analysis of 28 research findings in 18 articles was conducted to synthesize the results of these studies by calculating the mean effect sizes. This study reviewed and analyzed the previous studies in terms of type of online teaching, type of content, treatment period, and language skills. The results showed that online English teaching had beneficial effects for the college level students in general (g = .585). The specific findings were as follows: first, blended learning was more effective than online only learning. Second, General English courses that included writing, conversation, vocabulary, etc., were more effective than TOEIC courses. Third, the effect was higher when the treatment period was less than 8 weeks. The three results found from the meta-analysis did not show a statistically significant difference. Finally, productive language skills, such as speaking and writing, showed higher effects than reading skills, and there was a statistically significant difference. The pedagogical implications and suggestions for online teaching are also discussed.
