This research aimed to reveal change of pupil size when students are interested in phenomenon of life based on neuro-physiological studies and data. Seven sets of tasks were designed; each set consisted of interesting materials and normal materials of same phenomenon of life. These tasks was surveyed and verified by interest measures with 184 elementary students in South Korea. Eighteen students who were either 5th or 6th grade participated in this experiment and their pupil size was collected using eye-tracking technology and the results were analyzed by BeGaze3.4 and SPSS Statistics 29.0. First, when the subjects observed phenomena of life, the average pupil size of subjects was larger in the interesting task than in the normal task. Second, as a result of two-way ANOVA, the average pupil size of each subject was different depending on whether it was a baseline or interesting task or normal task. Most of the subjects had a larger average pupil size on the normal task and interesting task than on the baseline. Third, the more the subjects felt personally interesting, the larger the subjects’ pupil sizes. This study revealed that not only immediate emotional responses to stimuli but also scientific interest that arises through retrospective and cognitive processes can cause an increase in pupil size.
